A Word From Our Director………. John Long

  • “How Houston is quietly becoming the next American cycling powerhouse.”  We posted that article last week. The author points to the Bayou Greenways Trails, the recently passed Bike Plan, and HPD’s campaign to educate the public about the 3ft safe passing law — and to enforce it. All true, all good.  And there’s so much more going on to help Houston become a gold-level bicycle friendly city.
  • Look for billboards soon, promoting the 3ft safe passing law.  BikeHouston has partnered with HPD and Clear Channel Communications in this effort.
  • BikeHouston is working on a number of projects with the City of Houston, TxDOT and METRO to implement key connectors, important on-street projects and bicycle facilities at light rail stops.  The Lyons Avenue rebuild is one example.
  • And we’re looking forward to October — for the next and ever more massively awesome Moonlight Ramble Bike Ride.  Save the date: October 14th!
  • One last note.  Our former director, Michael Payne, stays in touch–cheering our successes and challenging us to do more.  Michael has issued a challenge to BikeHouston’s supporters. He will match all gifts made in July up to $5,000.  Why? To honor the work of our recently departed Advocacy Director, Mary Blitzer, who spearheaded the effort to pass the Bike Plan.  And to draw attention to cycling’s gentle impact on the environment — cycling is definitely a form of green, climate-friendly transportation. BikeHouston is working hard for you.  Now we need you to step up and support our work.
  • Ride on!
