Safe Passing Billboard Campaign with Houston Police Department

BikeHouston partnered with HPD and Clear Channel Outdoors for Houston’s first 3-feet safe passing billboards! This education campaign is intended to educate drivers about the bicycle ordinance, and cyclists to inform them of their rights. We are going to have 20 billboards around the city of Houston with the lovely faces and bicycles of our fellow supporters. What makes this effort so important is that it communicates that we, as cyclists, have legal protections on the road. HPD has got our back, and they’re on bikes too.

To complement the billboards we’re adding a new page on our website. This page will outline all you need to know about the safe passing ordinance with a checklist of what to do if you’ve been in a crash or harassed by a motorist. In addition, the Rice University Kinder Institute for Urban Research is following up with their initial near-miss study with a survey on our website. This survey will help inform policymakers of the where and how people ride their bikes. Be sure to take the survey if you’ve been in harrassed, nearly missed, or in an accident on your bicycle. We’re expecting the billboards to go up within the next few weeks so, if you see one, take a picture (not while driving) and tag us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter
