Shepherd-Durham Project Update
On June 4, 2024, the City of Houston announced that Mayor Whitmire reached an agreement with the Memorial Heights TIRZ on how to move ahead together on the Shepherd-Durham project. Then, on Wednesday, June 12, Houston City Council signed off on an interlocal agreement between the two parties, paving the way for the project’s second phase to advance to bidding and construction.
Yes, you read that right: the once-stalled transformation of Shepherd and Durham drives from I-10 to 15th Street is moving forward!
Make no mistake: this project is moving forward because of you. Scores of Houstonians like you showed up to Houston City Council meetings. Hundreds of you sent in postcards and wrote emails to tell the mayor why this project is so important to you. You talked with your favorite local businesses. You gathered your friends, neighbors, and colleagues and spoke up together. You stayed focused on how this project will make our city better and safer for everyone – whether on foot, on bike, or in a car – and you kept it up for six weeks. The mayor heard you loud and clear.
This is what successful advocacy looks like. But the Shepherd-Durham project is just one of many street safety projects being delayed by City Hall, so this will not be the last time we ask you to speak up.
Please support our work to make sure we’re equipped to conquer the next headwind.
